In 1895 she brought a charge of attempted rape against a white man in Singleton. In the late 1890s she married a man called Bill O'Connor and had a daughter, Ruby, to him in 1898. After he died she married Jack Miller in 1906. Jack and Harriet Miller had nine children altogether. They were both deeply involved in the work of the Aborigines' Inland Mission at St Clair. She lost one daughter aged three in 1911 and another daughter died of consumption at Waterfall Sanitarium, in Sydney, in Aug 1919. A few months later her husband Jack Miller died of pneumonic influenza at Dunolly, near Singleton. After his death she moved to La Perouse in Sydney. Some years later she returned to Singleton and lived with her growing family in a house in York St. During the Second World War, when accommodation was scarce, they were evicted from the York St house and were forced to set up a camp on Redbourneberry Hill near Singleton. Harriet lived the remaining years of her life in an overturned water- tank on Redbourneberry Hill. She died here in material poverty in March 1961 aged 88 years. He was the great-great-grandfather of the author. Harry was born in 1842 in New England, the son of a white man and a Koori woman of the Narwan people. In 1869 he married Sarah Madoo of the Gringai group of the Wonnarua people. Their first child, Harry, was born in 1870. Harry Snr was living at St Clair in the early 1880s, working for George Lethbridge who owned the Bridgeman estate. In 1882 Lethbridge charged him with assault, and after a long series of court hearings Harry was discharged. This was a very popular decision as obviously most people felt Harry was innocent. By 1882 he had six children and had another four in the next five years. By the late 1880s Harry and his family were living on the Redbourneberry common on the banks of the Hunter River opposite Singleton. One night in October 1889 Harry was drowned trying to swim the Hunter River from Singleton to Redbourneberry. He was 47 yrs of age. Between 1898 and 1906 he made seven court appearances on various charges, usually drunk and disorderly behaviour or indecent language. In about 1907 he came under the influence of the missionaries in Singleton and was converted to Christianity. He liked to preach, and between 1908 and 1919 gave several talks of his conversion. He and his wife Minnie, whom he married in about 1901, held Bible classes and prayer meetings in their home and offered themselves as native helpers to the Aborigines Inland Mission in 1910. Following the closure of the mission at St Clair, Herbie reverted to his former ways. In 1920 he was expelled from the government reserve at Mount Olive. In 1921 he was charged with being drunk and disorderly at Singleton and in 1923 he was charged with supplying wine to another Koori. Some years later she was converted to Christianity and worked for many years with the missionaries at St Clair and Redbourneberry. In 1907 she was running a Bible class for children at Redbourneberry. In 1908 she offered herself as a native helper to the Aborigines' Inland Mission. In 1914 she and her husband donated an organ to the church on the St Clair mission and in 1916 she wrote a letter to the Aborigines' Inland Mission magazine, Our Aim, thanking God for her recovery from a serious illness. In 1919 she and Herbie were farewelled from the St Clair mission. Sarah Madoo was born in about 1847, a member of the Gringai clan of the Wonnarua people. She was born at Eccleston on the Allyn River, nth of Paterson. In 1869 she married Harry Waters at Eccleston and soon after left the Allyn River area. Her first child, Harry, was born in Singleton in 1870. Her other nine children were Ada, Arthur, Caroline, Clarrie, Daisy, Edward, Ellen, Harriet and Herbie. In 1889 she was widowed when her husband drowned in the Hunter River. Rev. James S. White took up her cause with the Aborigines' Protection Board in 1890 and as a result she had a portion of land reserved for her on the Singleton common and a hut erected. She entertained the local municipal councillors from Singleton at her home on the common in 1891. There were several attempts by local officials to have her removed from this land over the years because she allowed other Kooris to visit her and camp from time to time near her hut. These attempts at eviction were resisted, and when Sarah did leave the Singleton common in 1910 to take up residence on the St Clair mission station, she did so voluntarily. She was still living at St Clair in 1914. In the latter years of her life she went to live with her daughter Daisy in Redfern, Sydney. She died at a house in Lawson St, Redfern, in March 1941 at the age of 94. Her death certificate, however, said she was 106. See James S. He was born on the Allyn River, north of Paterson. He claimed once that his father was an American negro, however, this was possibly a fabrication so that he could be supplied with liquor which was prohibited from being sold to Kooris. He first appeared in the records in 1889, when he cleared three acres (1.2 hectares) of land on Glennies Creek, near Singleton, and built a house. In 1892, he was charged by George Loder, a prominent white citizen of Singleton, with illegally using a horse. In 1895, he laid an assault charge against Harry Waters. A few months later, he was in court again, giving evidence against a white man charged with supplying liquor to Kooris. Later the same year, he complained to the Aborigines' Protection Board about his rations being discontinued. In 1896, he was employed by the APB to fence the reserve at St Clair, and in 1897, he appeared in court again, charged with indecent language. In 1898, he applied for a plough from the APB for use on the reserve at St Clair, and later in that year he was involved in an accident in which a horse was killed and a dray broken. In 1900, he applied for two horse collars and 24 sheets of roofing iron for work at St Clair, but the request was denied by the APB. The next year, he applied for six bushels of wheat (163 kilograms) from the APB. In 1904, he appeared in court again, charged with stealing a watch, but was acquitted. He was never greatly influenced by the missionaries at St Clair, and in 1909, he was removed from the mission station. In 1917, he again gave evidence against a white man accused of supplying Kooris with liquor.
